Finding Calm in Chaos: Scented Candles for Stress Relief and More!

Mammmaaaa….that loud whisper by my 7 year old was what woke me up this morning. He had suddenly remembered he had to finish his math assignment and submit it today. 5.30 am and he had woken up in the real sense.

I had to start breakfast, get lunch boxes ready and on top of it all, get him to complete his assignment. I didn’t know where to start. Everything had to be done in under an hour. I just handed out some papers to him giving out instructions at the same time.

I needed to relax, somehow, because I was setting the panic button on. I tried a few calming breaths, it only gave me the signal that I was wasting precious time. And then I remembered, I had an aroma candle kept somewhere, gifted to me by a close friend. It was to be used for situations like these. I fished it out and lit it in my kitchen. In about a minute I could feel the aroma calm my nerves. We worked on the assignment together, got it done in under 20 minutes. Stress needs to be handled positively to get the best out of the situation. And the aroma therapy candle was able to do just that.

Now, when we say candles the first thing that comes to our middle class brought up minds is, what we used when the lights when out in our houses while growing up. Well that picture has changed a bit as we grew up and have come to understand that a candle is meant to do that, light up a dark room, and much…much more. Of course a simple, straightforward, uncomplicated candle has also come a long way. It is has also developed, evolved and matured. We now have scented, perfumed and divinely fragrant candles available in the market for the benefit of all.

Now the question arises how do we use these candles in our daily practice. We need to make ourselves aware about their usage not only for bringing in light, but also to be used in bright daylight.

The other day when we came home from our week long vacation, my house had a musty smell of neglect. It took me hours of cleaning to get that off. A few days later my cousin dropped in and suggested that I use a scented candle or wax melt to get such smells off. The pleasant aroma of scented candles, works like magic for making a room smell divine.

Upon some research I realised that as we say aroma ‘therapy’ candles, they are not only used for relieving stress, but also can be used to ease exhaustion, be it mental or physical. They can be lit up while working on that last minute project or assignment, that has been worrying you.

Just light it up in your office area, well, for this you can also use wax melts, which are safer to use in your cubicle or cabin. Wax melts are cubes of fragrant soy wax. Use them with an oil diffuser or electric warmers and you are good to go. A friend of mine lives with her parents in law, who are in their late 70s, and she swears by these wax melts because they are easy to use and safe around children seniors or pets too.

I was also advised by this friend to use it around my 7-year-old while he is studying for his exams. It can help tone down the exam related anxiety. Speaking of relaxing the anxious brain, it also helps in inducing sound sleep. A simple candle lit up just before going to bed can help you sleep like a baby. Let your day end with the thought of loving your own self, keeping in mind that when you are relaxed you can achieve all that you have dreamt of.

On that note, I encourage you to go ahead and bring home some of these candles that will help you be with yourself. Until then, Ciao…
